The Canobolas vineyard and winery were established by the Smith family in 1986, who were pioneers of the wine industry in historical Orange.

After a lengthy search for a site with the ideal combination of climate, soil, and aspect to be able to create world-class wine, their search led them to the northern slopes of beautiful Mt Canobolas. The property has a long history of producing wines of great complexity, power and age-worthy characters.

Today it is farmed using regenerative principles by the Mattick family, who continue to build on the legacy of Canobolas-Smith, and produce unique wines with delicacy and finesse.

Over the past 40 years the vineyard and winery have been highly awarded and it is regarded as one of the greatest sites in Orange. The Chardonnay in particular has received many awards including the highest score ever for the Orange Wine Region. The Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon are regarded with equal praise and when produced the Alchemy blend is peerless in the region.

Back in the vineyard. We are spraying a mix of biodynamic preparations and micros nutrients to help the vines build up energy reserves for next year. Arguably, one of the most important times of the season is the weeks after picking before the leaves
For weeks on end, we curse the clouds and shout bloody murder at passing flocks of birds. Now the grapes are picked we greet the rain like an old friend and delight in the afternoon birdsong.
All hands on deck for our last pick. A vintage for the ages. 2024 harvest finishes with some beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon.
